Getting Started
What is the COS™ Methodology?

COS™ stands for Compliance, Oversight, and Sustainability - three governance pillars treated as one integrated system, not three separate functions.

It was developed from 23 years of field experience in infrastructure governance across Nepal, Qatar, and Bahrain, and published open-access on Zenodo under CC BY 4.0.

The core principle: you cannot have genuine Compliance without active Oversight, and you cannot have credible Sustainability without both.
Who is COS™ certification for?

COS™ is designed for infrastructure practitioners - construction managers, project engineers, resident engineers, site supervisors, quality officers, ESG coordinators, and anyone with governance responsibility on infrastructure projects.

It is particularly relevant for practitioners working on donor-funded projects (World Bank, ADB, IFC, GCF) where multiple overlapping standards must be managed simultaneously.

No prior degree or credential is required to enrol. The Entry Point Assessment (EPA) allows experienced practitioners to enter at a higher module.
Do I need a degree or prior qualification to enrol?

No. COS™ certification is open to all infrastructure practitioners regardless of educational background.

The pathway is designed for practitioners with field experience. The Capstone assignments explicitly welcome retrospective application - using a project you have already worked on.

If you have significant prior experience, apply for the Entry Point Assessment (EPA) to enter at Module 2, 3, or 4 without completing all previous modules. Email info@cosmethod.org to discuss EPA.
How long does it take to complete the certification?

Module 1 reading time is being measured and will be stated before the course reopens. Most learners should allow a single sitting or two.

Track A - read the handbook, receive the Certificate of Attendance. Nothing to submit.
Track B - in development and not yet available to enrol. Section 9, the 45-minute examination, and the capstone submission.
There is no fixed timeline and no expiry on your access. Modules 2 to 6 are in development and their contact hours will be published once each has been timed the same way.

What does Module 4 cover?

What is the handbook and how do I access it?

Each module has a password-protected digital handbook with 11 sections, accessed at cosmethod.org.

After payment is confirmed, you receive an access code by email within 2 hours. Enter it at the handbook login screen.

The handbook is licensed for single-user study. Sharing access codes is prohibited.
Exam & Capstone
What is the exam format?

Module 1: 30 questions, 45 minutes, 70% to pass (21 of 30).

Taken online at cosmethod.org/exam. You need your access code to start. Questions are multiple choice with four options, and most are scenario based rather than definitional. Each question carries a detailed explanation shown after the exam, whether you passed or not.

Five free practice questions are available without a code so you can see the format before committing.

The 30 questions are drawn from a bank of 40, and the draw differs between candidates and between attempts. Because 30 are served from 40, some questions recur between attempts. The bank is being expanded.
Exams for Modules 2 to 6 will be published with those modules.
How many attempts do I get? What if I fail?

The examination uses a tiered retake system:

• Attempt 1 - included in the course price, available immediately
• Attempt 2 - after 14 days, free
• Attempt 3 - after 30 days, free
• Attempt 4 and beyond - after 60 days, free

After each attempt you receive your score and a per-question explanation, so you know which sections to revisit before retaking.

Each attempt draws a different selection from the 40-question bank, and the draw differs between candidates. Because 30 questions are served from a bank of 40, some questions recur between attempts.
The waiting period is there so that a retake follows study rather than repetition.
What is the Capstone assignment?

The Capstone is a practical assignment, not an essay and not another exam. It asks you to apply the COS™ framework to a real or simulated project.

Module 1 Capstone: a Project Initiation Compliance Checklist. Project description, a Compliance Register of at least eight standards, a blank NCR Register, a Sustainability Baseline with three SDG targets and one measurable metric each, and one Ethics-First Decision Log entry. 600 to 1200 words excluding tables.
Simulated project parameters are provided in Section 8.2 of the handbook if you do not have a suitable current project. A self-assessment rubric is in Section 8.5.

Capstones for Modules 2 to 6 will be published with those modules.
Is the Capstone mandatory for the certificate?

No for Track A. Yes for Track B.

Track A, Certificate of Attendance - earned on completion of the handbook reading, and issued the day after your refund period ends, normally day 8. No exam, no submission, no capstone. This is the certificate that carries the contact hours. No Renewal Point value appears on it unless and until the CMCI Recertification Point Provider application is approved.
Track B, COS™ Practitioner badge - in development and not yet available to enrol; it will be specified and priced when it is released. It requires the examination at 70% and a submitted capstone, and is the one that evidences applied competence.
The two tracks certify different things, which is why they are separate. Track A evidences the hours you spent. Track B evidences that you can apply the framework.

Track A learners are encouraged to complete the capstone as practice and to self-assess against the rubric in Section 8.5 of the handbook. Nothing is submitted and nothing is marked.

Track B capstones are reviewed by CM Academy Consulting, by a Certified Construction Manager, within 15 business days of receipt of a complete submission. Submissions are reviewed in order of receipt, and where volume exceeds review capacity you will be notified of the expected date within three business days.
Capstone feedback is educational commentary on your application of the COS™ framework. It is not project-specific professional advice, is given without sight of your project documents, contract or site conditions, and must not be relied on for decisions on a live project.
Payment & Enrolment
How do I pay from Nepal?

Payment is processed internationally in USD. Email info@cosmethod.org with your enrolment request and a secure payment link will be sent to you. USD pricing applies to all practitioners worldwide.

How long do I have access to the handbook?
+

12 months from the date you first open it, not from the date you bought it. The handbook shows how many days remain each time you open it.

Opening the handbook starts the 12 months. It does not affect your refund right, which runs for 7 days from purchase whether you have opened the handbook or not, and it does not change when your certificate is issued, which is the day after your refund period ends.

What is the refund policy?

Full refund within 7 days of purchase, no conditions. You do not need to give a reason, and it does not matter whether you have opened the handbook. This applies to Track A. Track B is in development and not yet available to enrol.

If your country's consumer law or your payment method gives you a longer refund period, the longer period applies automatically. You will be told which applies to you before you pay.

Separately, and regardless of the above: if the course materially differs from what this site described at the time you bought it, email info@cosmethod.org and you will be refunded in full. That clause exists because a description can be wrong without anyone intending it, and the cost of that should fall on us rather than on you.
Your certificate is issued the day after your refund period ends, normally day 8. This is deliberate. A certificate is a credential you may report to a professional body, so every COS™ certificate needs to correspond to a purchase that is settled and will not be reversed. Issuing it on the day you finish reading would mean certificates existing against refunded purchases, and that would devalue the certificate for everyone who holds one honestly. If you are working to a renewal deadline inside that window, email info@cosmethod.org and say so.

Track B, the examination and the capstone, is in development and not yet available to enrol. It will be specified and priced when it is released, so there is nothing further to pay today and nothing further to refund.

Certificate
What does the certificate include?

The Certificate of Attendance (Track A) states:

• Your full name as registered
• Module name and contact hours
• CMCI Renewal Points, once CM Academy Consulting holds current CMCI Recertification Point Provider approval
• Completion date
• The COS™ Methodology version DOI (10.5281/zenodo.23588775)
• CM Academy Consulting
• A certificate ID for verification

No score appears on any COS™ certificate. A certificate records completion, not a mark. This is deliberate and it will not be varied on request.
The certificate carries the version DOI rather than the all-versions DOI, so it always points at the edition of the methodology you actually studied, even after later versions are published.
How do I use the certificate for CPD?

COS™ certificates state contact hours, which you self-report to your own professional body. Acceptance is your body's decision, not ours.

Module 1 contact hours are being measured and will be stated before the course reopens. Modules 2 to 6 will publish their hours once timed.
COS™ module design was developed with reference to UNESCO, Towards a common definition of micro-credentials (2022). UNESCO has not reviewed, assessed or endorsed COS™, and no endorsement is claimed or implied.

COS™ is not independently accredited by any university or professional body. A CMCI Recertification Point Provider application is in preparation; until it is approved, no CMCI Renewal Point value is claimed.

Check with your own professional body on how it classifies self-directed online learning for CPD reporting. Your certificate carries a DOI, so the learning behind it points at a permanent, citable publication record, which is the kind of evidence a body asks for. Whether it accepts self-directed learning at all, and how it classifies it, is for that body to state. CM Academy has not surveyed professional bodies and makes no claim about what any of them accept.
How long is the certificate valid?

COS™ certificates do not expire. They are dated to the completion date and the DOI reference is permanent.

As the COS™ Methodology is updated (new versions published on Zenodo), holders of earlier module certificates may receive update notifications. Continuing education pathways will be added as the programme develops.
